Josh's Big Green Big Year
In 2013, Josh set a goal to see or hear as many bird species as possible within Barry County, MI without the use of fossil fuels. This goal combined two of his passions in a way to revitalize his love for birding, set new fitness goals for his cycling and running, and bring awareness to the rich potential in birding close to home. Big Green Big Years (BIGBYs) are becoming more popular across the world and anyone can do them. See http://www.greenbirding.ca/ for more information on this growing trend. Josh's goal was to see or hear 200 birds and over the course of the 2013 calendar year, he reached that goal and even surpassed it by one. Not only did he reach his goal, he set a new Barry County big year record in the process and according to eBird, in Barry County the closest birder to Josh's final number was 11 birds behind his pace (using any means possible).
Along the way, Josh received huge amounts of support from key individuals that soon became his crew. The camaraderie and willingness of his crew to help Josh reach 200 turned out to be one of the keys to his success. As part of the crew, Dave (Glances At Nature) filmed and captured key times Josh was in the field. These photos and videos combined with many of Josh's entertaining stories from the year have become a new presentation/program offering.
