South Carolina, Part 2

January 19th, 2009 · No Comments

It looks like today was our final day of nice weather.  Our trip started out with cool temps, but pure sun.  That was the outlook for entire week but unfortunately, the last 2 days were either super cold or rainy.  This morning was great; sun and warming temps.  They called for cloudy skies and rain late in the day so we birded and photographed for 5 hours until the clouds came in and the winds picked up.  They’re calling for the possibility of snow and cold temps tomorrow morning so I don’t think we’ll be birding/photographing before our flight out at 12:30.

We started birding a freshwater pond this morning as not much was seen on the saltwater side of the causeway at Huntington Beach State Park.  We noticed some waterfowl and also 4-5 Forster’s Terns hunting.  We set up at the end of a boardwalk and while we scanned for new birds I spent time photographing the terns as they made passes in-front looking for fish.

I had a great time slowly moving in on a Tri-Colored Heron.  It took some time of course but I was able to get within 15ft of him while he was preening.  What an adventure.  How’s this for close?

I was able to get some mors shorebird shots but nothing worth posting.  All in all, it was a nice relaxing trip with some great times in the field.  I’m already looking forward to the next trip!
