Photographer Profile: Josh Haas Photography has always interested me and I've always dabbled but it wasn't until my proper introduction to nature that my photography really took off. My love for birding, more importantly Raptors, and all other wildlife encounters has grown immensely in the last few years. A lot of this is directly connected to my photography. My involvement with Raptors is really what jump-started my connection. For me, nature photography is capturing natural moments in time. It's not about forcing things to happen. I've learned, however, that just photographing anything you see in nature is not nearly enough to create useful and artistic images. You have to let creativity take over and not only capture moments in time, but also be aware of exposure, color, background, foreground, and much more.
Learning photography, composition and design from my Dad has really taken my photography to the next level. His patience and care for the perfect photograph is always rubbing off forcing me to go after better images. Our field adventures and long hikes through nasty terrain carrying pounds of heavy gear have made for some hard but gratifying experiences. Many times luck plays a large part in nature photography because nature doesn't always allow for planning but what I've learned is spending the time is most important. Many of the greatest nature photographs have spawned from hours, days, or even weeks of field research, sitting or hiking in the field, and shooting hundreds of photographs just to get one shot I'm happy with. Some of my "Signature Images" would include the Bald Eagle Stitch, any of the flighted birds, wide panoramic landscapes, and mammal shots.
